Jersey Water employees have raised £21,824 for two Jersey animal charities; £1,100 donated to Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group and £20,724 to JSPCA.
In 2020 Jersey Water employees chose the JSPCA as their chosen charity for the year and, for the first time, decided that they would also donate to a second charity, the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group. However, with the onset of the pandemic in 2020, all fundraising activities were curtailed; quiz nights, open days and hydration station events – all had to be cancelled. Some creative fundraising took place with employees working from home during the lockdown; one employee flipped a tractor tyre 2,100 times = 4.2 kilometres = 2.6 miles = 5 hours of serious hard work and raising £1,091.
However, with so many events cancelled during 2020, it was decided to continue fundraising for the same charities during 2021. Jersey Water included a leaflet in customer bills asking customers to donate to the JSPCA, with the Company matching customer donations up to £10,000, an idea that caught on with our customers who were very generous. Jersey Water also supported the JSPCA’s own appeals for funds during the pandemic with social media posts and leaflets.
Helier Smith, Chief Executive, Jersey Water, said, “I am delighted with the fundraising efforts from our employees and the generosity of our customers. The last two years have been hugely challenging for our community as it faced up to the global Coronavirus pandemic, and it has been particularly tough for the island’s charitable sector. Jersey Water employees have been fundraising for island charities every year for the past seven years, donating over £104,000 to good causes on the island. It is fantastic to be able to support the JSPCA and Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group and donate these funds to support them in their important role in our island community.” Debra D’Orleans, CEO, JSPCA, said, “We are thrilled to have received this donation from Jersey Water. Working with them for the past two years has been a delight, and we know how hard they all tried to support us during the lockdowns. A donation of nearly £21,000 is amazing, and on behalf of the whole team and our volunteers, I would like to thank Jersey Water and their customers.”
