People walking through the town centre can now fill up their water bottles at a new refill point in Halkett Street.
The vibrant, eye-catching station, with bespoke spraypainted finish, has been installed by Jersey Water in partnership with the Parish of St Helier, as part of its regeneration of the area.
Martin Skyba, Jersey Water’s Network Service Delivery Manager, commented:
“This has been a fun project to work on with the Parish of St Helier. We have intentionally opted for a playful design so that members of the public can easily spot the refill point and make good use of it. Giving the community access to free water and a practical solution to single-use plastics is part of our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and inspiring others to do the same.”
Simon Crowcroft, Constable of St Helier, added:
“We are delighted that a water refill station is included in the newly refurbished Halkett Street. The Parish has made a number of commitments in support of environmental goals, and the water station will help Islanders wishing to stay hydrated at the same time as reducing reliance on single-use plastics. I hope that this will be the first of many refill stations to be added to the St Helier town centre.”
Local street artist MIDNIGHT aka James Carter spraypainted the unit to follow the same design as Jersey Water’s four indoor refill points at Jersey Airport, installed last August. The artist will be putting the finishing touches on the Halkett Street unit on Wednesday 20 March between 12:00 and 14:00.
Halkett Street is one of three outdoor stations that Jersey Water is installing in 2024, honouring its commitment to deliver a minimum of two per year at high footfall locations across the Island. The utility currently has planning applications pending for two further stations, in St Aubin and St John’s village.
