Jersey Water is pleased to announce that their Bursary Award for 2014 has been awarded to Lyndon Gledhill, who will be studying Chemistry at York University from this September. Lyndon attended Hautlieu School where he gained A levels in 2013 followed by a gap year spent working.
Lyndon Gledhill commented “I am delighted to have been chosen for the Jersey Water Bursary Award which will be of great support to me whilst I undertake my studies at university”.
The Jersey Water Bursary Scheme has been successfully running since 2009, and is designed to assist local people embarking on an undergraduate degree course in a subject relevant to the supply of water (including engineer, environmental sciences, water resources, management and conservation or chemistry). The Award provides funding for one successful applicant each year towards the cost of study for the duration of their time at university. As well as financial assistance, Jersey Water offers a paid work experience programme during holiday periods.
Since its inception two students have graduated and a further 3 are working towards completing their degrees, they are; Conor Hubert studying Civil Engineering at Bristol University; Lauren McCarthy studying Chemistry also at Bristol University and Sean Mitchell studying Mechanical Engineering at Bath University
Cheryl Kaye, HR Manager at Jersey Water commented: “It is becoming more difficult to select one student for the award due to the high calibre of applicants and this year saw the highest number of applications. It is really encouraging to see the interest in studying degrees in the engineering and sciences fields. As well as providing financial support the Jersey Water Bursary Scheme is also designed to promote a wider understanding of water supply and supporting disciplines. The job market is increasingly competitive and by providing opportunities for people to develop new skills and experience in the workplace, we are investing in the future”.
Applications for next year’s Bursary Scheme Award will be invited in January 2015, when further information will be available on the Jersey Water website https://www.jerseywater.je/community/bursary-scheme
