Before the water in the reservoirs can be supplied to our taps, it must be cleaned so that it is safe for drinking, cooking and washing. This happens at the Water Treatment Works.
Water Treatment Works
All of the water supplied by Jersey Water is treated at one of its two water treatment works – Handois and Augrès. The treatment works use special methods to clean the water to make sure the water is safe for us to drink and cook with. Both Handois and Augres can each supply enough water each day for everyone in Jersey to use.
Water Quality
To make sure we supply good quality water at all times, we must test the water to make sure it is nice and clean. But, the quality of the water in different reservoirs isn’t always the same. So we use a special electronic monitoring system at each one. We then take the best quality water to be sent on its cleaning adventure.
Jersey Water Laboratory
At Milbrook in St Lawrence, we have a clever laboratory where water is tested using the latest equipment. This is where we make sure the water is safe from bacteria and chemicals before we send it to you. In the laboratory there is a room where sample bottles and equipment are sterilized to make sure they are safe and clean.
The staff in the laboratory collect over 7,000 samples for testing each year! They have to test the quality of the new pipes that have been laid to make sure everything is OK and answer any questions about water quality that our customers may have. The results of the water quality are checked against the water quality results in a laboratory in England by the States of Jersey Analyst Department.
