Jersey Water has received a Gold Award for Environmental Best Practice as part of the UK 2005 ‘Green Apple Awards’.
Presented at the House of Commons, Chairman, David Norman and Chief Executive, Howard Snowden, represented the Company, which has been given the award for the achievements at its new Les Platons Water Supply Scheme. The Les Platons Scheme was implemented initially to provide a gravity fed water distribution network for some 10,000 customers in the high areas of the Island. Prior to Les Platons network, these customers were supplied by separate booster pumping stations.
The implementation of the Scheme enabled Jersey Water to achieve its objectives of reducing energy consumption and operating costs – through abandonment of the pumping stations; as well as a substantial reduction in water consumption and leakage, through the ability to better regulate water pressure through the single network. The introduction a service reservoir at Les Platons, which feeds the network, has also improved the security of the water supply system by providing an additional 9,000m3 of treated water storage, which will greatly assist in periods of maximum demand.
Commenting on the Award, Managing Director and Engineer, Howard Snowden said: “This is the first year Jersey Water has entered the Green Apple Awards and we are delighted that our Scheme has met the relevant criteria in terms of reducing energy consumption and wastage, whilst maximising availability of treated water supplies for our customers.
“We are particularly pleased that this is the second time in recent months that we have been given an award for our environmental efforts. At the end of last year we were awarded a Scenic Lanes Award by the National Trust for our planting of a hawthorn/hazel hedge along La Ville es Gazeaux in St Lawrence. In order to provide water to our customers, we have to undertake essential works in both the town and countryside. Wherever possible we endeavour to bring improvements to the areas in which we work and are therefore delighted that both these schemes have received recognition for their respective benefits to the environment”.
