The existing 6” water main in Burrard Street will be upgraded with work starting on Monday 21st January 2013, the project is due to take six weeks. The Burrard Street main is 106 years old and over recent years has experienced a number of bursts. During the last 106 years, St Helier as a town centre has expanded considerably, the work being undertaken by Jersey Water is essential to continue to maintain the infrastructure in a planned manner. The upgrade will also enable Jersey Water to continue to meet demand for water from its customers and ensure that there is a reliable service for the next 106 years.
The work planned to be undertaken will include transferring connections from the old pipe to an adjacent newer main. This will prevent bursts and improve water capacity in the area, and at the same time there will be a renewal of old service pipe connections to each property so that when the project is complete the mains and service pipes should last for another 106 years.
Hugo Willson, Infrastructure Manager for Jersey Water commented “In order to minimise disruption to customers and with advice from the States of Jersey Transport & Technical Services we will be carrying out some of the work at the weekends and at night time. We will also need to close short sections of Burrard Street in phases to complete the works efficiently and will have signs in place to keep motorists and pedestrians informed, we will be maintaining access to premises. We would like to apologise in advance for any disruption that these essential works may cause to residents and businesses in town which is why we only renew pipes when we absolutely have to, however due to the age of the current pipe we are unable to put off undertaking this work any longer.”
