Jersey Water has submitted a planning application to install the island’s first permanent water refill station, making it easier for people to refill from the public water supply and reduce single-use plastic bottle waste.
It is proposed that the station will be located at the Weighbridge near the pétanque pitches. The area was chosen for its high pedestrian footfall, and it is expected to be a popular location. The Weighbridge is a venue for local events such as the Jersey Boat Show and Liberation Day.
Jersey Water sponsors Refill Jersey, part of Plastic Free Jersey; more and more people want to reduce their environmental impact, reducing plastic waste is essential for our island and this fountain will support this reduction.
Jersey Water has been providing free temporary refill stations for over the last five years, to support some of the outdoor events across the island. In addition, the Company can often be seen at festivals with its employees running its popular hydration stations.
However, this will be the first permanent station if the planning application is approved. The proposed station is contactless, so when refilling a bottle, the user does not need to touch anything reducing any risk of Covid transmission. To ensure high water quality is maintained, Jersey Water’s laboratory team will regularly test the station.
